CARLOS GARAICOA | Biennale Images Vevey, Théâtre Oriental-Vevey

Opening: Saturday, September 7, 2024
September 7 – September 29, 2024

Partitura is a multifaceted work by Carlos Garaicoa that took ten years to complete. The Cuban artist filmed street musicians in Madrid and Bilbao to create a sound portrait of different cities. He entrusted these recordings to composer Esteban Puebla, who fused them into a symphony. Based on this joint work, Garaicoa created an original orchestra. He arranged tablets and sheet music with invented notations on some forty music stands, each dedicated to an itinerant artist he had filmed. Headphones allowed each piece to be heard individually, while the collective composition resounds in the Théâtre Oriental-Vevey.

An immersive work, Partitura musically connects people who would otherwise be isolated. An archive of street music, the project becomes a hymn to the creative force of community and the richness of diversity.
