<p>A Galeria Filomena Soares tem o prazer de apresentar a primeira exposição individual de Dan Graham, um dos artistas mais significantes do panorama da Arte Contemporânea Internacional. A inauguração irá decorrer na quinta-feira, dia 17 de Novembro, pelas 21h30, e estará patente até 7 de Janeiro de 2017. A mostra compreende um pavilhão especialmente projetado para a exposição intitulado After Vasco da Gama e três vídeos.</p>
<p>O artista Norte-americano Dan Graham (n. 1942) é reconhecido como um dos artistas e teóricos principais da arte do pós-guerra. Ao longo dos últimos cinquenta anos, a prática de Graham abrangeu escrita, fotografia, performance, arquitetura, instalação, vídeo e curadoria. O seu trabalho analisa as funções sociais da cultura contemporânea e os seus sistemas, desde a música rock, passando pela televisão e artes visuais, até à arquitetura. As suas influências são amplas e ecléticas, incluindo o Minimalismo, a Arquitetura Modernista, o paisagismo ao longo dos séculos, os mapas das cidades, a cultura skateboarding, o ícone de rock Patti Smith, o arquiteto paisagista Günther Vogt e o artista-escritor John Chamberlain.</p>
<p>Posicionar-se na fronteira entre diferentes disciplinas é central na obra de Graham. Como o próprio artista refere: “Eu gosto de coisas híbridas”. Característica que é evidente nos pavilhões espelhados de vidro, que Graham tem vindo a criar desde finais da década de 70. Os seus pavilhões têm sido instalados em diferentes lugares do mundo, nomeadamente em terraços com vista para cidade ou em áreas mais remotas, delineando a interdependência entre as esferas da arquitetura, da paisagem e dos seus habitantes.</p>
<p>Os pavilhões de Graham são feitos de materiais modernos tais como o vidro espelhado, portas de correr, aço inoxidável e alumínio, mas inspiram-se num leque alargado de tipologias arquitetónicas de diferentes períodos da história: desde a cabana rústica aos pavilhões Rococó, passando pela forma do pavilhão moderno do Mies van der Rohe até gazebos, paragens de autocarro e cabines telefónicas.</p>

<p>Estas obras são simultaneamente arquitetura e arte e ao mesmo tempo estruturas funcionais e esculturais. São desenhadas para o espectador entrar e circundá-las, sendo só ativadas com a sua presença.</p>
<p>Na sala principal da galeria apresenta-se o pavilhão After Vasco da Gama uma estrutura elíptica de três faces composta por vidros espelhados de dupla-face, cuja o acesso à obra é feito através de uma porta de vidro deslizante. Através do vidro espelhado o visitante é confrontado pela sua própria imagem, pela dos outros visitantes criando múltiplas perspetivas, de tal forma que experimenta uma sensação de desconforto, dado o deslocamento constante entre o espaço interior e exterior, entre reflexo e transparência, tanto enquanto indivíduo como fazendo parte do grupo.</p>
<p>Um Segundo espaço da galeria é dedicado à exibição dos vídeos Rock My Religion, Death by Chocolate and Dan Graham Pavilion Compilation.</p>
<p>Rock My Religion é um filme-documentário que mostra a analogia entre a música rock e os costumes religiosos da comunidade Shaker, que foi uma das mais importantes comunidades religiosas da Costa Leste dos Estados Unidos. As personagens do filme são músicos punk e rock (Patti Smith, Jim Morrison, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Eddie Cochran) e figuras históricas (como Ann Lee, fundadora da comunidade religiosa dos Shakers). Graham intercala texto, filme e performance com momentos de narração, cantos e gritos, construindo uma história da música rock e uma teoria sobre as origens da cultura Pop da América do Norte. O vídeo tornou-se um filme culto e uma referência na História da Arte e da Imagem em Movimento.</p>
<p>Para a realização de Death by Chocolate (1986-2005; Vídeo, som; 8′), instalou-se uma câmara de filmar no centro comercial West Edmonton (Canada) durante um período de quase 20 anos. O resultado apresenta uma visão estéril mas bem-humorada acerca da cultura de “centro comercial” e do espaço social, dando-nos uma perspetiva detalhada da típica estética arquitetónica das superfícies comerciais e do seu público consumidor. O espectador fica imerso no centro comercial West Edmonton que se autoproclama “o maior espetáculo do mundo”. Graham convida-nos, assim, a refletir sobre temas como natureza e cultura e o nosso lugar na cultura de massas.</p>
<p>Dan Graham Pavilion Compilation, (2014; Vídeo, som; 24′ 28”) é uma seleção de vídeos de pavilhões feitos por Dan Graham, nomeadamente Waterloo Sunset (Hayward Gallery, London, UK), Yin/Yang (MIT Cambridge Massachusetts, USA), Half Space/Half Square (Casa del Fascio, Piazza del Popolo, Como, Italy), Two-way Mirror Triangle, One side Curved (Nordscape Project, Norway) e Double Exposure, Museu Serralves, Porto, Portugal)</p>
<p>Em colaboração com a Cinemateca Portuguesa, haverá também uma sessão de Rock My Religion no dia</p>

<p>Dan Graham</p>
<p>Dan Graham (nasceu em Illinois em 1942, vive e trabalha em Nova Iorque), emergiu nos anos de 1960 a par de artistas como Dan Flavin and Sol LeWitt. Foi um dos artistas que mais influenciou a Arte Conceptual. Participou em quatro Documentas (1972, 1977, 1982 e 1992) e o seu trabalho já foi apresentado em museus e galerias no mundo inteiro.</p>
