Carlos Motta nasceu em 1978, em Bogotá, Colômbia e vive e trabalha em Nova Iorque, E.U.A.. Licenciou-se no Whitney Independent Study Program, Nova Iorque (2005/06) e ganhou uma bolsa do Guggenheim Foundation em 2008. Faz parte dos quadros da faculdade na Parsons The New School of Deseign, The School of Visual Arts, Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts da Brad College, Internacional Center of Photography e The Vermont College of Fine Arts.

O seu trabalho esteve presente em diversas exposições internacionais, tais como: The Guggenheim Museum, Nova Iorque; MoMA/PS1 Contemporary Art Center, Nova Iorque; Institute of Contemporary Art, Filadélfia; Museo de Arte del Banco de la República, Bogotá; Museu Serralves, Porto; National Museum of Contemporary Art, Atenas; CCS Bard Hessel Museum of Art, Annandale-on-Hudson; San Francisco Art Institute, São Francisco; Hebbel am Ufer, Berlim; Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, São Francisco, e New Museum, Nova Iorque.

Carlos Motta é um artista multidisciplinar cujo trabalho se baseia em história política numa tentativa de criar narrativas contraditórias que reconheçam a inclusão de histórias, comunidade e identidades reprimidas.
